rooftop pamorama

today, i embark on a journey. beyond mind, body and soul... today, i journey around the world.

rom now until i land in prague, i will not have internet access. frankly, that doesn't bother me. to be honest, what really bothers me is that i will be wearing the same pair of underwear, pants, shirt, and t-shirt for the next three days. i know that those physical discomforts pail in comparison to the next seven months.

fueled by taurine, nicoteen, water, and the prospect of getting gored by a bull. i am ready for what happens next. i am ready to see the world.

no matter what happens next, i will have the memory of my friends. standing tall on a williamsburg rooftop, i will never forget the tearful goodbye.

honestly, never before have i found it so hard to embark on a journey. never before have i found my love for so many to be so painful.

never will i forget the hugs, the fears and the seven cheers. as today marks the beginning of a journey, tomorrow marks the beginning of an opportunity like none other. let fortune find us all and let us all be blessed to seek out buried treasure.

the absurdity of freedom in new york city

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

believe it or not, new york city is one of the safest places in the united states.
believe it or not, new york city is one of the most hypocritical places in the united states.
from tripods, transfats, to the freedom of speech, each has lost out to a safer, kinder, and greener new york.

don't believe me? check out this video from this past weekend's critical mass ride. in the video, you will find nyc's street preacher, rev. billy from the church of stop shopping, arrested for reciting the first amendment. why? well, the man who conjured up the ornate rules to freely assemble is in the background and apparently considers the constitution harassment.

freedom's burden

in seven days i depart to discover the new world

yes, it's true! this is my last week of insanity and jubilation. as the United States celebrates liberty and freedom from tyranny, i am gearing up to discover seven new freedoms.

to be honest, i am unsure of what comes next. departing from new york is the first step of many. unlike most trips, once i set foot in Prague, I have no firm transportation plans and will be purely dependent on the luck of hospitality. i am purely dependent on fortuna septi (aka the luck of seven).

while i might not have a traveling companion, i hope to bring all of you along. first, we need to spread the word. my good buddy, whurley, put up a link on digg and we need people to "digg it"

if we make the front page of digg, i can promise you many more contributions from around the world. also, if you have a blog, please toss up my chipin widget and ask your friends to donate. this trip is predicated on our connections. believe it or not, you are my first connection to the rest of the world.

also, i need your help in completing my itinerary. i'm looking for contacts throughout lebanon, israel, egypt, saudi arabia, india, southeast asia and south america. if you know any good techies, activists, organizers, coworkers, campers, thinkers, etc... send them my way...

OH and since today is the launch of the iPhone, guess what i have on camera? an interview with the first two guys sitting in line! whurley, raven and i trekked out the very night they set up shop. it really is a ridiculous video!

finally, i am having two parties. a going away brunch on saturday, 7th of july from 11 - 3pm, and another this sunday, 1 july. starting around 8:30pm, we will celebrate the first full moon of summer. both will be held in brooklyn, ny. if you are interested in attending, please rsvp.

on 1 july 2007 - starting at 8:30pm, please bring something to grill and drink. i will have some seven zins, i won't have the ability to turn water into wine. my good friend Jonathan Long will be spinning vintage tunes all night long as we watch the moon come to life.

on 7 july 2007 - from 11 - 3pm, please bring something to share. let it be a tub of wine, magic tricks or a basket of fruit, you will be introduced to my company of friends. as i know many of you, many of you don't know each other. once we have said our goodbyes, at 3pm, i will depart for JFK. i hope you can attend and celebrate friendship.

feeling the drupal love?

Tagged:  •    •

on monday, after i uploaded the iPhoneDevCamp video, my shared at dreamhost went craptastic. in complete frustration, i started sending out feelers looking for a hosting provider that loves Drupal. after emailing eric gunderson from development seed, he passed along the name of one Thomas Brenneke from networkredux.

Network Redux-1 if you have downloaded adium, imagemagick, or a fading red, you have used networkredux and did not know it! as supporters of an open source community, thomas jumped at the opportunity and has donated some rack space. over the next few days, we're going to flip the switch and move to networkredux.

THANK YOU THOMAS and NETWORKREDUX

why seven topics...

20070528.jpg This is a 21st century journey to the intersection of digital and organic communities. Communicating through a digital medium that has no borders, I want to share with you how this new world interacts.

Free culture. After a half-century of broadcast communications dictating the common perspective, people are now reconnecting—one-on-one, peer-to-peer, node-to-node—and proving that traditional copyright and patent restrictions need to be reformed to promote creativity.

Free and open-source software. Software should be a tool, like a shovel. With zero distribution cost, global, boundless open-source communities are competing in a world of co-opetition.

Couchsurfers and bloggers. People—from those who blog their souls to those who reserve their couch for strangers—are using technology to augment real-world relationships and bring modernism back to our post-modern world.

Barcamps, unconferences, meetups, and coworking. The online digi-world uses physical ad-hoc meetings to socialize, share, and advance ideas.

Agents of progressive social change. Inventors and concept peddlers—though not always leaders—change the way we think about the world through technology.

The environment. When we outsource jobs, we outsource pollution, waste, and other negative impacts of consumerism; we need to continue to use technology to educate the public on the true footprint of the products we use and lifestyles we choose.

Happenstance. Receiving a random e-mail, discovering a flickr profile, stumble-surfing across a facebook page, connecting in a café—the world grows smaller with every person we meet, and there is an art to discovering their stories.”

i've got a honda 350k3 (1971) for sale

Tagged:

honda cb350k3 - 1 CB350K3 (1971, twin) for $1000 have you ever wanted to own a motorcycle classic? here's your opportunity to ride one of the world's most beloved bikes! last summer, i purchased a Honda cb350k3 (1971, twin), and had the carbs professionally rebuilt by motorgrrl's head mechanic. btw, he's 350 nut. sadly, as the summer heated up, i found my self traveling more than anticipated, garaging the bike and only riding it a few times.

now as i plan on departing again, i no longer need this fun to ride bike. painfully for the past week, i've had difficulty starting and i'm looking to sell the bike cheap. the cb350 is currently registered to me and holds a valid inspection in the state of new york. i'll include a cover, maintenance book, a noose lock or a U lock, and maybe a helmet.

for $1000, give this puppy a good home. photos on flickr link to original post - http://luckofseven.com/node/107 contact noel - forsale(at)noneck.org or +1.917.657.6999

from xtreemedecals - about the CB350K3...

The CB350K3 Super Sport 350 was sold in 1971 in one of three colors: Candy Gold, Derby Green Metallic, or Light Ruby Red. The gas tank, side covers, and upper fork were the basic color (gold, green, or red). The headlight shell was also the basic color. The gas tank stripes were black. The engine was a 325cc 4-stroke OHC parallel twin with two CV carburetors. The transmission was a 5-speed. The serial number began CB350-3000001

t minus 11 days - transcendence

Tagged:  •    •    •

with 11 days to go, there are many things that i'm trying to figure out. thankfully, i am now sleeping knowing that these issues are logistical.

the last 24 hours completely burned me out. after spending the day talking to my self and drinking too much coffee, i met up with whurley. on the ride from the Roosevelt hotel to a web 2.0 social networking session / social media club at some "bridge and tunnel" bar, we delved deep into a quick recap of the iphone press. after walking through the doors of the social networking meetup, my friend's smiles indicated i was soon to be pimped.

on a an empty stomach, i repeated the same statement over and over and over.... seven...seven...seven...seven... despite that everyone loved the idea, every time i described the next seven months, my heart skipped a beat. from handshake to handshake, i was scared. impressively, i was not the only scared individual. once i laid out my plan, people freaked. i kinda wanted to say, "it's a ok, i freaked out too.."

instead, they would look at me with big doe eyes and ask how, why, route, etc... by the end of the night, i was ready to depart. i now can only imagine what it's like running for office and run from 0-60 all evening long.

day 2 at the apple storeafterward whurley, grace, charles and i chucked incessantly that our new iPhone homeboy, greg packer is that guy who stands in line for everything. from bill clinton to the pope, from new york times to associated press, greg is the that guy who strives to be the first. he was quoted frequently enough to be banned from the associated press.

after dinner, whurley and i jetted to meetup with the iPhone boys. upon arrival, we discovered a three more in line. david clayman, aka mr taproot, told us that a well respected newspaper reporter went out of his way to exclude mr first in line. i cringed at the prospect that a reporter has the gaul to say that the man who stands inline for everything is not part of the story. this reporter even went out of his way to exclude greg from photos.

it's really funny to think that before today, greg was an urban legend. from first in line to front page story, he's that guy who has stood the test of time. if i had the time, i would spend my last days documenting his life, friends, support network, and stories. i can't even begin to fathom the hours spent in line holding a sign saying, "i'm that guy!"

deep down inside, i feel for the guy. i wish i had the time to see how his story will last the test of time. i wonder about all the other gregs who have stood the test of time looking to be first? i wonder, how many gregs stand in line and are no worse for wear.

btw, this week, these are the last things that i have to complete.
* check out moshe's storage building next to the navy yard
* aquire containers that are lockable, waterproof, and airtight. when i last lived over by the navy yard, i was introduced to the world world's most traversed freeway. sealing is healing!
* find airline ticket
* pack room and clear out my bedroom
* despite my last post of packing too much, there are a few things that i need to clean out.
- i need to get a pack lock that allows me to wrap my bag and leave it in a coffee shop without fear of someone walking away.
- poncho
- emergency mirror
* transfer utility bills to my roommate
* list motorcycle on craigslist
* promote saturday's 07/07/07 departure brunch (which everyone is invited)
* make final appointment for shots

t minus 12 days - frustration & inspiration

Tagged:  •    •    •

Speed with 12 days till departure, frustration seems to be my number one enemy...

in many of my other projects, i've always had the luxury of having a peer. now that this internal exploration is around the corner, frustration is the most common recurring emotion. frankly, i'd love to tell you about them...

first, gear preparation. over and over i count the items i have and know that i'm scheduling to take to much. the thoughts of production have enveloped my workflow to make a nervous wreck. without a doubt, the lull moments of preparation are killing me. to be honest, i've never been more scared in my entire life.

confounding these prospects are the responses from couchsurfing.com and the groups.drupal.org admins. both think that this project is not within their scope of promotion nor purview. which of course, only exacerbates thoughts of inadequacies of articulation. constantly, i ponder "what the fuck am i trying to say..." or "if i'm just blabbering on about some meaningless intersection of futility..."

then, when i attempt to say all of this on video, i can't. i get stuck mumbling.

too boot, it is well proven that my social network is meetspace not virtual. despise the fact that this has been a word of mouth campaign and that i think i have been successful at raising funds. i honestly anticipated being closer to $7,777. which also brings about further doubts of articulation.

ahh, then there is the fact that i can't seem to find my tickets for iberia airlines, nor even recall them being sent. this is despite the fact that customer service assures me they were sent but can not seem to locate a tracking number.

...and when all of this frustration has boiled to a point where i'm about to scream, i don't...

the converse of these situations lie within the company of good friends. it's true, you don't know how much something is worth until you loose it. ironically, the pain that first birthed this project is now rekindled. within each moment that passes, my desire to be sedate and amongst loyal, loving friends grows stronger. without a doubt, when i leave on the 7th, i will leave the best group of friends i've had the pleasure knowing.

then there are thoughts of an old love. to be honest, she is the real reason why this trip was conceived. with the heartbreak that enveloped my soul, i leaped into space looking to explore those things i did not know. now after many years, thoughts of her and this trip are tied into one.

i know that i can not escape this love, nor do i know how to bring it back. while my mind escapes in dreams of fancy, my reality around me boils into a gas. everyday is now a struggle. i no longer have the luxury of time.

within a few more days, hours, mins, my life will no longer be the same. now i must nestle myself into the lyrics of kris kristofferson "Freedoms just another word for nothin left to lose." if this trip is about exploring freedom, i must boil my thoughts and set them free.

why have a logo in latin?

Tagged:  •

in last night's couchsurfing philandering, i was presented with the same question "why are you using a language you don't know? use something that you know..."

...and i won't write down the rest of the ridicule she shot out...

damn it, can't a man just want a sexy logo written in latin. why is it so hard to create an artist representation of what has festered for many years. my father and i have always discussed what should be on our modern family crest. we've debated for many years with little agreement.

why use latin?
there are too many reason to why i want latin, but i'll give you one... "plvs vltra"

in my mind, invoking latin is invoking all the spirits that have created who i am today. from roman legionaries to my ancestors who voyaged with christopher columbus on his second voyage. from my grandfather who never had a formal education and survived the brutality of the korean war to my mother who married a dream and traveled the world.

latin is THE romance language. i can not think of anything more poetic than a dead language that once "ruled the world."

ps - rotating languages is already in the mix. once the logo is framed, there will be an on going project to translate...

anyone know latin?

every explorer should have a flag to plant in the ground! - noel hidalgo

...yes, yes... i know and understand the connotations of flag planting or as some may like to call it conquests, thievery, desecration, etc... but that does not deny the fact that planting a flag is no more than the thought of leaving your mark on the planet. sure we now openly debate our current marks on the planet, but that does not deny the fact that humankind has been leaving it's mark on the planet since we appeared from the great dust of mysticism or evolution...

to that extent, my good buddy dave hollier is working on a pirate inspired logo for this journey. consequently, we one major dilemma. we don't know latin...

first, we are debating on how to have a date displayed. for example, i would like to have "7th of july 2007" at the top of the logo. in latin, do you write "MMVII VII VII" or "dies saturni vii julious mmvii"? preferably, i would like to have it all in roman numerals, but i've never seen any date written that way.

according to wikipedia's julian calendar, 7 july is a "nones" day and would be written as "a.d. VII Id. Julius MMVII." consequently, 7 july on the julian calendar is really 20 july on the gregorian calendar, and therefore not my day of departure. according to another site, 7 july on the julian calendar is written as "dies veneris non. ivl. mmdcclx a.u.c.". so now that i'm really confused, i'll go back to gregorian calendar which states "dies saturni vii julious mmvii."

second, i want to translate "luck of seven". according to UBC, the translation could break down to....

Seven
septem

Luck or Lucky

felix felicis : lucky, fortunate, happy.
fors fortis : chance, luck, fortune
fortuna : fortune, luck, fate, chance.
fortunatus : fortunate, lucky, happy.

...but within the latin grammatical structure there is also...
contigo : (with dat.), to happen, befall.
cum : (prep + abl.) with.
insisto : to enter upon [a journey] tread; (with d.) follow.

in my dimwitted, uneducated guess, i would translate "luck of seven" into "fors fortis insisto septem" or "fortuna insisto septem." could it also be "fortuna cum septem" or "insisto fortuna cum septem?"

can you help?

i now have my presentation schedule for TOL's new media essentials course. while it's still subject to change, i will at least get one night to decompress from my initial new york city departure and a sleepless night in pamplona.

on tuesday, the 10th, i'll be speaking quite a bit. the first two sessions will be discussions, the impact of web 2.0 on advertising, business and politics; then in the afternoon, how to build a community for your project. in the early evening, i'll have an hour long workshop on Assignment Zero and the technical components of building a citizen journalism network. on wednesday morning, i'll have the honor of presenting a talk on the global blogosphere while evgeny discusses the local blogosphere.

without a doubt, the research for these conversations will be daunting, but no fear. you will get to see it all right here.

Dreamhost will you marry me?

Dear Dreamhost,

We've had a long relationship since December 2004. I love your ethical hosting! I love your humor, countless blog posts and newsletters that make milk shoot out of my nose. I love how you match donations raised through your site. I love the countless hours laying in the park and reading your wiki. Most enjoyably, I love our quality time walking up and down the endless site's of the month. I love our one-way relationship so much, I want to take it to the next level. I want Dreamhost to accompany me on my seven month journey around the world. Together, I want to explore open-source communities, open-source technology, social entrepreneurs and global change.

I'm sure you get countless offers overwhelming your inbox with nigerian get rich quick scams. i mean "offers." I bet because of your generosity you are also slammed with non-profits asking you to rig the site of the month campaign. Without a doubt, I'm sure your good-looks and fine grammar has been met with countless marriage proposals. Well, in short, I'm not here to do the same. I am a simple man with a straight forward project who is looking to get hitched to the one hosting provider he dearly loves. Within this relationship, I'm just looking for one simple thing - Stability...

I know this can be a beautiful relationship. I know that our love is rooted in the same soil. I know that our partnership will produce a many of offspring who will grow into the heavens and make many dreams come true. I know that together we can host an infinite number of thoughts and change this place for the better.

So, now I bow on one knee and ask, "Dreamhost will you partner me?"

PS - You can respond via email or preferably via a comment at http://luckofseven.com/dreamhost_will_you_marry_me
