the meal to end all meals

it's been two days since i've eaten a real meal. two nights ago, i headed out with hayal pozanti and her two friends, gokce and matan. after bouncing around from a street cafe, to an open air cafe, we climbed into an elevator to a roof top cafe for a taste of traditional turkish delights and anisette. covered in yogurt and rich sauces, we dinned in blissful content.

around 1am, we strung up our sails and departed to our abodes.

after a few hours of delightful dreams, i found my self in a place like none other. surround by unspeakable horror, i struggled to pull my self from the nightmare on elm street horror into the real world.

my eyes opened, my head swelled and my mouth filled. lucky, i was able to jimmy the door open, and rock my head toward what this hostel called a toilet. needless to say, you can put the rest together.

(warning, graphic content ahead... but like that night, if i don't get it out now... you might never make it to the plot...)

every thirty minutes or so, i found myself in another unpleasant world; desiring i was not shackled to a six room dorm room with five other unhappy, i managed to make it to the bathroom.

after the first hour, i howled every imaginable curse world and drank two liters of water.

after the second hour, i debated calling an ambulance and in between the dry heaves, munched four tablets of pepto and drank another liter of water.

during the third hour, i prayed, shat my pants and with all my might extruded the three or so liters that sat unpleasantly within my system.

somewhere among all those things. something worked. something unexplainable worked. for lack of a better term a miracle...

back in 1996, a similar incident happened, sans the alcohol part. for 48 hours, i convulsed in an american university dorm room. depleted of everything, i was rushed to the emergency room and placed under 24 hour supervision.

back in 1996, my father rushed from ohio to take care me...

alone. cold. rotting in hostel more apropo to a squat. i wondered what would take care of me this time...

one of the more interesting parts of this journey has been the discussion of faith. from the jewish quarter in prague, to a brief mash-up discussion on the streets of paris, to dries and an intimate conversation about baptism, to a punk rock bar in amsterdam drinking with three dutch jews and debating Mormonism, to openly debating religion in istanbul...

faith has become a current, but my faith does not have a title, name or singular belief. when i departed, i set out not knowing what i will find, but knowing what i will change me and embolden my faith....

... but if i was to discuss religion, what faith do i espouse?
... do i say i was a catholic, because my parents baptized me when i was born?
... am i mormon because i was raised in the mormon church and know it best?
... do i say i'm i a Buddhist, since i once studied it?
... i'm not just agnostic ...

BUT what i will say... faith comes in all different shapes and colors. don't be afraid of your passions, desires and most importantly your beliefs. refuse to take the world at it's face value... prove to yourself that mind is stronger than matter. if you want to change your world... take it by the horns and run!

freedom's burden

in seven days i depart to discover the new world

yes, it's true! this is my last week of insanity and jubilation. as the United States celebrates liberty and freedom from tyranny, i am gearing up to discover seven new freedoms.

to be honest, i am unsure of what comes next. departing from new york is the first step of many. unlike most trips, once i set foot in Prague, I have no firm transportation plans and will be purely dependent on the luck of hospitality. i am purely dependent on fortuna septi (aka the luck of seven).

while i might not have a traveling companion, i hope to bring all of you along. first, we need to spread the word. my good buddy, whurley, put up a link on digg and we need people to "digg it"

if we make the front page of digg, i can promise you many more contributions from around the world. also, if you have a blog, please toss up my chipin widget and ask your friends to donate. this trip is predicated on our connections. believe it or not, you are my first connection to the rest of the world.

also, i need your help in completing my itinerary. i'm looking for contacts throughout lebanon, israel, egypt, saudi arabia, india, southeast asia and south america. if you know any good techies, activists, organizers, coworkers, campers, thinkers, etc... send them my way...

OH and since today is the launch of the iPhone, guess what i have on camera? an interview with the first two guys sitting in line! whurley, raven and i trekked out the very night they set up shop. it really is a ridiculous video!

finally, i am having two parties. a going away brunch on saturday, 7th of july from 11 - 3pm, and another this sunday, 1 july. starting around 8:30pm, we will celebrate the first full moon of summer. both will be held in brooklyn, ny. if you are interested in attending, please rsvp.

on 1 july 2007 - starting at 8:30pm, please bring something to grill and drink. i will have some seven zins, i won't have the ability to turn water into wine. my good friend Jonathan Long will be spinning vintage tunes all night long as we watch the moon come to life.

on 7 july 2007 - from 11 - 3pm, please bring something to share. let it be a tub of wine, magic tricks or a basket of fruit, you will be introduced to my company of friends. as i know many of you, many of you don't know each other. once we have said our goodbyes, at 3pm, i will depart for JFK. i hope you can attend and celebrate friendship.

i now have my presentation schedule for TOL's new media essentials course. while it's still subject to change, i will at least get one night to decompress from my initial new york city departure and a sleepless night in pamplona.

on tuesday, the 10th, i'll be speaking quite a bit. the first two sessions will be discussions, the impact of web 2.0 on advertising, business and politics; then in the afternoon, how to build a community for your project. in the early evening, i'll have an hour long workshop on Assignment Zero and the technical components of building a citizen journalism network. on wednesday morning, i'll have the honor of presenting a talk on the global blogosphere while evgeny discusses the local blogosphere.

without a doubt, the research for these conversations will be daunting, but no fear. you will get to see it all right here.

my initial travel arrangements...

four flights have been confirmed... i'll be departing nyc on 7/7/07 at 9pm, arrive in barcelona for a six hours. then, i'll depart for pamplona for a bit of bit of bull running. after 22 hours on the ground, i'll depart for prague to help teach a week long course and snag a few interviews...

during this leg, i'm only going to need one lovely couch and a guide around pamplona... i wonder how many couches are available?

on the luck of seven was an open-source, around the world project by noel hidalgo, a new york city based activist, organizer, barcamper and coworker.

for seven months, he traversed the globe. using a new media voodo (blog, vlog, wiki, flickr, couchsurfing, twitter, myspace, dopplr, and facebook), noneck harnessed the collective knowledge of the internet, and report on seven topics of freedom. this trip was funded by 253 people and supported, house, fed, and loved by countless others.
